It’s the first statewide ban of its kind in the country and will go into effect in 2019. Thanksgiving, known to most as our national holiday of giving thanks for what we have and fighting with our relatives around the kitchen table (whatever you do, don’t bring up Trump with Uncle Frank). You’ve heard the heartwarming heroic animal tales, from bomb-sniffing rats to doggo’s in goggles digging through collapsed buildings for earthquake survivors. But have you heard of the awards ceremony to honour these legendary pups? The American Humane Hero Dog Awards is an annual campaign which recognizes the dogs who start out ordinary and go on to do extraordinary things.

The 2017 Emmy Awards had it’s tense moments – from Stephen Colbert using Donald Trump as his personal comedic punching bag to Donald Glover addressing racial tensions in his acceptance speech. Even Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin had something to say about the current state of affairs in the USA. But, the awards ceremony wasn’t completely focused on heavy political issues.

Imagine a black tie gala – you’re wearing your finest evening wear, sipping champagne in the candlelight. You lean over to your date, staring lovingly into their eyes, you toss a dog biscuit into their open, drooling mouth. The Bark Ball, the hottest event to hit Washington, was a benefit gala put on by the Humane Rescue Alliance to raise funds for pups in need.

Still championing environmentalism from the grave, Steve Irwin (you may know him as the Crocodile Hunter) will be posthumously honoured on the 2018 Hollywood Walk of Fame for his work in television. Alongside his wife Terri, Irwin was the face of the documentary nature show The Crocodile Hunter, subsequent Crocodile Hunter films and the owner/operator of the iconic Australia Zoo in Queensland. Steve Irwin was a dedicated conservationist who was known internationally for his television persona.

The results of the annual World’s Ugliest Dog Contest are in, continuing a 28-year tradition at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California. While the name may imply they’re making fun of these pooches, they’re actually celebrating what makes each dog beautiful in their own special way. Including purebreds and mutts, many are rescues from shelters or puppy mills.
